5 Products to Keep You Cooler While Sleeping

Sleep heat is a major issue for many people. Whether you suffer from medical conditions like menopause or have night sweats from diabetes or a thyroid disease, sleeping hot can interrupt the uber-important REM cycle and wake you up – usually drenched and super uncomfortable. Sleep is something with which a lot of people already struggle; topping that with added heat is a bona fide way to make sleep even more elusive. But how do you combat sleep heat? Here we’ll review some products and ideas that can help you keep cool while sleeping.

1. Hybrid Mattresses

If you tend to sleep hot, you’re quite aware that your mattress can make this bad situation quite worse. Stay away from heat-trapping memory foam and opt for a hybrid cooling mattress instead. Paired with the appropriate bedtime accessories, a mattress that traps heat can make a huge difference. We prefer the Puffy LUX Mattress, which has cooling layers that help disperse body heat. It also has a cool-to-the-touch quilted cover. The Magniflex Magnicool Gel Mattress is another viable option. Magniflex’s innovative and exclusive MagniCool Gel fabric offers unparalleled freshness while promoting air circulation, which creates a perfect microclimate between the body and the mattress. Finally, the Fusion Supreme mattress from M Lily keeps the sleeper cool and comfortable with its combination layers of breathable and cooling foams.

2. Cooling Mattress Protectors

A cooling mattress protector is another way to combat heat when you sleep. Generally, cooling protectors keep your mattress clean, too. The Purecare Cooling Mattress Protector, for example, offers five-sided protection from dust mites, allergens, mold and more. It tunnels heat away from your body and features proprietary FRíO® rapid chill cooling fibers, which cool you down fast.

3. Graphite Pillows

To mitigate the tendency of certain types of pillows and mattresses to trap heat, manufacturers have started to add cooling technology to their bedding products. One option you’ll find is graphite. Graphite is an innovative material used in bedding to help regulate body temperature and improve sleep quality. The technology works by absorbing and dissipating excess body heat, resulting in a cooler and more comfortable sleep environment. We tried the Blu Sleep Prestige Support Graphite Pillow and fell in love with its cooling capabilities. This graphite-infused pillow is temperature-regulating and has a padded cooling cover to boot. The Blu Sleep Ice Gel Pillow is another great option, as is the Purecare Cooling Fiber Pillow, which cools five times faster than traditional polyester and tunnels heat away from you as you sleep.

4. Cooling Sheets

Cooling bed sheets do make a difference! TENCEL™, bamboo, and cotton sheets all have cooling properties at varying degrees. TENCEL™ Lyocell sheets are the best choice because of their moisture-wicking properties and high breathability. You’ll awake feeling refreshed, invigorated and cool (!) with the silky-smooth touch of TENCEL™ Lyocell. Purecare’s Refreshing sheets have a cool-to-the-touch feel and are naturally resistant to moisture, ensuring a night of cooler, comfier sleep. You can also opt for the Purecare Soft Touch TENCEL™ Modal Sheets, which are made of long-staple cotton, for a sheet with excellent breathability and a lightweight feel. The Bamboo Rayon Sheets wick away moisture in the same fashion as the others while being gentle on the skin.

5. Cooling Pillowcases

Due to their impressive breathability and moisture-wicking capabilities, silk or bamboo pillowcases are the best pillowcase fabrics for providing heat relief. Additionally, certain cotton and linen pillowcases, particularly those with light and breathable weaves (like percale), also help carry away heat. Try the Purecare Soft Touch TENCEL™ Modal Pillowcases for exceptionally soft and breathable comfort, or the Pure Silk Pillowcase for that plus vital hydration for the hair and skin.

Other tips:

*Remember to keep it dark in the bedroom. Although it may be natural to open the blinds and windows to let air circulate, drawing the shades and minimizing the entry of light can help keep the temperature down in the bedroom.

*Keeping the bedroom dark in the hours leading up to bedtime can aid in the production of melatonin. Take steps to make sure your bedroom is as cool as it can be at night. Use fans for better air circulation in the evenings and draw the blinds during the day to keep the sun’s heat outside.

*Use a dehumidifier to reduce humidity, which can make the temperature feel hotter.
